Life Saving Award Recipient: CSO Scott Wilkey

June 3, 2025

It did not take Scott Wilkey long to make an impact as a Court Security Officer (CSO) in Denver. Five weeks into his tenure, he played a vital role in saving a life after a cardiac event.

While training in the control room, a Chief Deputy US Marshal came running in, saying an individual was down and to call 911. Scott, who is EMT-certified, went to render aid and investigate with the Chief Deputy. They quickly determined the individual was not breathing and had no pulse, so they began CPR and got an AED. They administered four cycles of CPR. Once attached, the AED advised a shock, which was delivered. CPR continued for two more cycles after which the patient spontaneously regained both breathing and pulse. As the EMTs arrived, the individual signaled they were alert and conscious by giving a thumbs-up.

Scott received the inaugural Walden Security Life Saving Award for his work that day.

Surprisingly, this was the first time Scott used CPR in his 40+ year law enforcement career. He began his career as a police officer in Gainesville, Florida, working on many significant cases, including burglaries and murders. He retired as a Detective Sergeant and moved to Boulder, Colorado, where he worked as a Law Enforcement Park Ranger with the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks.

As a Park Ranger, Scott was EMT-certified, firefighter-certified, and certified in search and rescue. He responded to multiple fires during his tenure, noting the difference needed to switch uniforms and fight fires.

“At any given time during the shift,” highlighted Scott, “your mindset and skillset would need to change depending on the call dispatched. Being a Ranger kept me on my toes.”

However, fighting fires is not the worst call of his career. On March 22, 2021, he responded to the active shooter at King Soopers supermarket in Boulder, during which 10 people, including a Boulder Police Department Officer, were killed. He received a Medal of Valor for his work on that unfortunate day.
